The halberd is a cut and thrust combination staff weapon consisting
of an axe-like blade, rear facing break and spear point. With a long
history of use, the poleaxe was very popular weapon. With a good sharp
point it could be used as a short spear, the back hammer or spike could
be used to batter or pierce armor and the axe head itself was quite
lethal.
Halberd continues to be used for ceremonial use and court bodyguards becoming highly decorative status symbol.
